Jane joined THR in September 2005 as a mature-aged trainee, after working for over 10 years as an accounting clerk.
"I began working at a local college as a Wages/Purchase Order Clerk full time. They were ‘Investors in People’ and actively encouraged their staff to take further qualifications. I had previously gained experience in a wide range of accounting and administrative areas, but it became clear that I could not progress my career without qualifications.
The College ran AAT evening classes, and I was asked if I would like to attend. So I thought, “why not have a go?” I thoroughly enjoyed the course and I passed all the AAT exams first time, gaining an award from the College for ‘Outstanding Performance’ on the AAT programme. This boosted my confidence considerably and I wanted to take my studies further.
Through a recruitment agency, I gained an interview at THR. They were clearly very professional but also very approachable. I felt at ease talking to them. The training programme (with block release for study) was exactly what I was looking for! All in all it was perfect.
I am now at the ‘Professional Stage’ of my studies. I hope to gain the ACA qualification within the next three years.
THR has helped me with my studies by funding external training, exams, books, travel and membership fees as well as providing study leave. In the office my study is supported by one-to-one teaching, as well as visiting Clients to gain experience in Audit work. Access to Videos and CDs keeps me up-to-date on changes to legislation and taxation. In-house courses run by qualified team members provide on-going training on specific subjects.
I really enjoy working at THR, there is always someone to ask if you are unsure about something and all work is monitored for accuracy. Feedback is given on every job, and six monthly staff appraisals are held. I just wish I wish I’d done it years ago!
My advice to young people is – don’t wait – do it now!"
