John found out about THR through the ICAEW website. He works in Accounts and Business Services.
"I have always been a good mathematician and having spent a few years doing other jobs, I decided that I wanted to get a job that would let me use my maths and offer continued development. I found out about THR through the Institute of Chartered Accountants website and then looked at the THR website for further information. I chose to work at THR because THR chose me!
I started work at THR in June 2002 and completed my AAT qualification in June 2004. I then took the fast-track route into the ICAEW Chartered training. The AAT qualification automatically exempted me from certain exams at the Professional stage of the Chartered Accountants qualification. It also meant that my contracted training period was backdated, which meant I could qualify faster than graduate trainees.
I completed my Chartered training in September 2006, passing all of the exams first time. In addition to my studies, THR provided and continue to provide both internal and external training in specialist areas, use of IT and current business/accountancy related issues. This continued professional development (CPD) is a prerequisite of retaining the AAT and ACA certification once qualified. However THR's policy of including trainees means that this compliments your studies by keeping you up to date with accepted practices/legal changes and broadens your knowledge in the subjects not covered whilst studying due to their specialist nature.
This broad experience enables you to deal with a variety of clients/issues with confidence, sets you apart from other students/newly qualified accountants from other firms and gives you an idea of the type of work you may wish to pursue once qualified. By working at THR, I have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of subjects and had the financial support to complete my studies and progress to a position with greater responsibility.
I enjoy working with the variety of people at THR and within a friendly atmosphere. If you are thinking of studying to be an accountant, my advice is to research into which qualifications will give you the best opportunities and will keep you interested in what you are doing.”
